Bone Grafting

All Coast Dental in Pacific, CA, offers bone grafts to our patients. Bone grafting is needed when the jaw isn't strong enough to house a restorative device. This bone loss happens naturally when a tooth is missing and never replaced.

Dental implants can’t be placed when the jaw isn’t strong enough. At your appointment, an x-ray will be taken of your jaw. This will show us the condition of the bone. If you are eligible for a bone graft, the next part of the process will begin. The tissue from the graft can be obtained in different ways. It will either be taken from a tissue lab or bone will be taken from your jaw, hip, or tibia. We will then examine the tissue to make sure it's of good quality and the right length.

At the procedure, you will first be placed under general anesthesia. One of our dentists will make an incision along the area of the jaw being repaired. The graft will be inserted and held in place using a variety of different methods, like pins, screws, etc. The area will then be sutured or sewn shut.

It’s important to follow any and all post-operative instructions given to you. Try to avoid vigorous activity while you are healing. Recovery depends on the size of the graft and the health of the patient. Because of this, recovery can take between two weeks and a full year.
