Dental Hygiene and Periodontal Health

Dental hygiene is important for periodontal health. At All Coast Dental in Pacific Beach CA, Dr. Joseph Boulos, and Dr. Julie Boulos stress the importance of not only the care you get at the dentist's office but the care you provide for your teeth and gums at home.

Dental Hygiene

The ADA (American Dental Association) has some specific recommendations for what dental hygiene should look like in the home. Their first recommendation is that you work with your personal dentist who will know any specific needs that you have. The second recommendation is that you brush your teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste. To go along with this recommendation, they suggest:

  • Use a soft toothbrush
  • Make sure your toothbrush fits the shape and size of your mouth
  • Replace your toothbrush every three to four months
  • Brush the outer surface, the inner surface, and the chewing surface of your teeth
  • Hold the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to the gums and move back and forth slowly
  • Use up and down motion on the front teeth

You need to clean between the teeth as well. This requires flossing or using an interdental brush once a day. For dental hygiene and periodontal health in Pacific Beach, CA, Dr. Joseph Boulos, and Dr. Julie Boulos of All Coast Dental, can show you and your children exactly how to brush and clean your teeth most effectively.

Periodental Health

Periodental health requires that you take good care of your teeth so that your gums can remain healthy. For some people, doing the bare minimum of two brushings daily and one flossing just isn't enough. It may require a special prescription mouthwash or a more in-depth cleaning provided by the dental office. What you don't want to happen is gingivitis.

Many things can cause your gums to become inflamed, even if you take good care of them. Some people are genetically prone to gum disease. Some medications can cause gum issues. Having diabetes or being pregnant, smoking, and crooked teeth can all cause the early stages of gum disease. But, a good deep cleaning and proper dental care at home can often reverse early gum disease.

One of the best things that you can do for your teeth and gums is to get regular dental care. Your dentist will notice any changes and make recommendations on how you should keep your teeth and gums healthy.
