Implant-supported dentures can be life-changing when you’re missing all or most of your teeth. With implant-supported dentures, you get your beautiful smile back plus regain full functionality for eating and speaking clearly. You have several options for implant-supported dentures. Whether you’re considering full-arch dental restoration or all-on-X options, Drs. Julie and Joseph Boulos at All Coast Dental have a solution for you.
Dental implants consist of three components: a titanium post embedded into the jawbone, a small abutment on top of the post, and a porcelain crown above the gum line. It takes about three to six months for the titanium screw to fuse with the jawbone fully. Then, your implants are ready to complete. From there, you and your dentist can begin the restoration process. Implants give various types of dental restorations a sturdy foundation.
When deciding which type of implant-supported dentures you want to go with, one of your first decisions will be whether to opt for fixed dentures or those you can remove. Fixed implant-supported dentures are secured permanently and can be removed only by a dentist. Removable implant-supported dentures can be removed for cleaning. These implants attach to your dental implants through special attachments.
Implant-supported dentures have many advantages over traditional dentures.
Also known as fixed-detachable dentures, hybrid dentures combine features from fixed and removable dentures. They are permanently attached to dental implants and consist of a metal framework covered with acrylic or porcelain artificial teeth.
All-on-X refers to the number of dental implants used for full-arch restoration. With the All-on-X system, patients can restore their full set of teeth with fewer implants. All-on-X can be done with anywhere from four to eight dental implants.
All-on-4 Implant-Supported Dentures
All-on-4 dental implants replace one full dental arch. In the system, four implants are placed strategically along the jaw, and two are positioned at an angle so they have maximum contact with the jawbone. This is a good solution if you have moderate bone density and don’t need a bone graft.
With All-on-6 implant-supported dentures, you enjoy all of the benefits of All-on-4 but with even more strength and stability. Six implants give you a stronger bite force that is more evenly distributed.
If you have excellent bone density, All-on-8 implant-supported dentures might be an excellent option. This approach involves more surgery and recovery time, but you will have superior stability.
